Solution to traffic deaths needed

2017-08-31 06:01

A CO-ORDINATED approach by road users and authorities is needed to reverse the increase in deadly road traffic accidents. The tragic death of 20 human beings last week is a matter of grief and sorrow for the entire country.

Without doubt, some motorists need to be schooled on following traffic and road regulations and rules. As anger mounts, especially against taxi drivers, I ask if there is enough citizen activism and political will to make our roads safer.

According to reports, road traffic accidents are on the increase, and not all are taxi-related. It is time for a national dialogue to have people change their driving habits. How can we get public- transport operators and motorists to heed the call to give priority to road safety?

When will traffic authorities implement stricter measures that will transform the attitudes of drivers in order to stop this carnage? It seems the charges drivers receive for offences do not deter them from negligent driving.
