Race Four of the South Coast Fever MTB & Trail Run Series 2018 took place on Sunday, October 7 at Lake Eland Game Reserve.

With Sunday being the final race of the competition series, it was a heated battle for competitors to score some last valuable points for the grand prize of R5 000 and the championship title for 2018.

Following a week of rain and cold weather, there was some apprehension about race conditions, but the day of the race turned out to be a perfect sunny South Coast summer day.

After a break of more than two months, it was time to get back to some serious racing and there was a definite expectation and excitement in the air.

Registration opened at 5 am and the 20km trail run got underway at 6 am, followed by the 10km at 6.15 am and the 5km fun run at 6.30 am after an official briefing by Charles Stander. Then it was the MTB racers’ turn.

The 25km got underway first at 7.30 am, followed by the 45km at 7.45 am and the 10km fun ride at 8.15 am. Young and old, families and friends participated and were surrounded by deer, wildebeest and giraffe as they cycled within close distance.

Lake Eland management pulled out all the stops and special congratulations go to The Lake Eland Race Organiser, Mandie Stander, and her team. The race was in honour of her son, the late Burry Stander, a champion cyclist who was tragically killed by a taxi in 2013.

At the series prize giving, special guest speaker Kay Robertson, General Manager for Marketing at Ugu South Coast Tourism, said they fully support the MTB Series as it is important to showcase the natural beauty of the area.

The series is like no other in that each of the four races has drawn crowds to beautiful locations in a celebration of local tourism.
