South Coast gets Unisa campus

2018-12-20 06:00

LAST Wednesday, people on the South Coast awoke to the exciting news that for the first time they will have their very own university campus within two years.

The University of South Africa and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality on December 5 signed a memorandum of understanding that will see the construction of a Unisa campus in Uvongo. According to the municipality, the campus will be a breakthrough for higher education on the South Coast which has an alarmingly low four percent of its population with a tertiary qualification.

RNM Mayor Nomusa Mqwebu said the campus will not only assist people on the South Coast but also neighbouring areas such as the Eastern Cape and East Griqualand.

According to the agreement, the municipality will donate land to the university.

“The fact that prospective students have to travel 120 km or so to Durban to access Unisa and other institutions, cannot be ignored. Therefore it is extremely exciting that many of our residents will save on transport and other costs when they access quality higher education on their doorstep,” said Mqwebu.

“What we are building is the future of the municipality, its people and by extension, the future of the country,” said Unisa vice chancellor Professor Mandla Makhanya.

RNM municipal manager Max Mbili said construction should be complete by 2021.
