MANY post boxes in certain residential areas have been left to rot over the years resulting in mail getting wet, lost or landing up in the wrong postboxes and in the wrong hands.

Post boxes in Gamalakhe, Hibberdene and Margate are rusted, the paint has faded and the roofs of the mail boxes have collapsed.

Children are often seen playing on top of the roofs vandalising the post boxes or using them to hide behind to smoke illegal substances.

Many postbox renters are now asking where the money the post office receives for the rental goes.

The Fever contacted SA Post Office in this regard and Andrew Nongogo, head of operations, said they are aware of the postboxes on the South Coast that need maintenance and the company is doing maintenance based on finance and the material available.

“Maintenance is ongoing in the area and provision has been made in the current budget for the improved maintenance of postboxes. We also have in-house maintenance teams responsible for repairing cluster boxes,” said Nongongo.

He urged customers or residents, who have rusty or unmaintained postboxes, to email the SA Post Office on customer.service@postof or call the post office contact centre at 0860 11 1502.
