POTHOLES have been an ongoing issue on the South Coast for years. Berg Road is in an industrial area in Marburg and it is a danger to motorists as the potholes have become too big to allow two vehicles to pass each other safely.

Patsy Govender, who uses the road daily, said drivers using this stretch of road have to swerve from one side to the other to avoid damaging their vehicle’s tyres and suspensions. She said that the road has not been fixed since 2013.

“The road has been bad since we moved here in November 2013, and it has just got steadily worse. Reports and requests have been sent to the municipality but nothing has been done to fix it,” said Govender.

In July last year, Fever reported on the state of the road.

Govender said late last year it looked like the municipality had started to do maintenance but it only did about 500 metres of paving along the road next to Coca-Cola.

“When I called the municipality, they told me there was no budget for it. When it rains and the ditches are covered with water, you cannot make out exactly where the holes are, and as a result they damage your tyres and rims,” said Govender.

Last Friday, a Margate resident of Holmestrand Road sent pictures of a minibus taxi that was stuck in a sinkhole that appeared on the road outside his home. He said it had been reported to the municipality two days before but nothing had been done. The resident said that earlier in the week before it appeared, there had been water flowing down the street.

RNM was contacted for comment but none had been received at the time of going to press.
