THE LifeZone Foundation Youth Day sports tournament at South Coast Academy on Friday was a great success.

A total of 16 teams participated in netball, soccer and volleyball.

The participating teams were from Gamalakhe, Nositha, Masinenge, Ramsgate and areas around Margate.

Also playing in the tournament were teams from Margate SAPS, Margate Netcare Hospital, South Coast Academy and the South African Teachers Union.

Senior citizens from around the district held demonstrations to show their support for the day. Organisers said they were pleased with turnout.

“The tournament was successful because most of the players and spectators were the youth, which was our main aim,” said Lifezone Foundation chairperson Sipho Matiwane.

Matiwane said the tournament was a breakthrough for the Margate community.

“The event was a first of its kind for the area as it prevented the youth from being exposed to drugs, especially on June 16.

Jeventus were the soccer champions after beating Gamalakhe United 1-0.

In the netball finals Sadtu beat Rockers 26-16, and in volleyball, Wild Cats beat LifeZone Real Movers 30-14. The senior citizens and SAPS Legends were given certificates of appreciation. The chairperson thanked all supporters.
