DION Davey might not be a new face at St Martin de Porres School, but he is the face of the new principal.

Davey came to St Martin de Porres as a level 1 teacher and, then HOD and finally principal.

St Martins is a Catholic special needs school and he is a practising Catholic at Christ the King Church.

Davey has been a teacher for 26 years and admits that teaching at the school is “challenging”.

“Being a teacher at a special school is not a walk in the park as we deal with pupils with various disabilities, however, I believe that to be a good teacher for special needs children you need to be a special person,” he said.

Davey said he would find it difficult to teach in an ordinary school again as he has grown fond of his pupils.

Davey is married and the father of two boys.

With the every new position comes responsibilities and Davey is taking the school to a whole new level as the school is now twinning with skill-development institutes and tertiary education for those with special needs.

“One of our twinning projects is with Gallaudett University in Poland where three teachers and six pupils go to Poland to experience life at a special-needs university,” he said.

Davey said at times you get emotional when you see how amazed the parents are about the work their children do.

“One special moment for me was at the awards ceremony when mentally challenged pupils modelled their garments tailored-made by them and parents could not believe that the dresses were made by their mentally challenged child - it was so touching.”

Davey said he looks forward to the many years ahead at the school.
