Starting a business not always the answer

WITH high unemployment rates on the South Coast - 15% unemployed and 41% not economically active - more turn to crime, drugs and alcohol to escape poverty.

Administrator for the South Coast Jobs Facebook page Sue Hulley said the 10 to 30 daily membership requests on her page were but a small portion of the real numbers.

“One of the effects is that we are losing some of our talented youth and a lot of our skilled workers to big cities and overseas job offers,” said Hulley. Hulley, however, cautioned job seekers to be wary of scammers who offer positions that appear “too good to be true” and saying they must have the right attitude when seeking employment.

“Many people feel they are entitled to every job available, instead of having the necessary skills. This is a very limiting attitude to have, as prospective employers see this kind of attitude as not belonging to a good team member,” said Hulley.

President of the South Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vijay Naidoo also cautioned against venturing into business as an alternative.

“While as a chamber we support operational youth and women-owned businesses we find the success of most businesses stems from owners’ long standing work experience in their fields.”

Naidoo said he encourages the youth to rather look to get work experience first, with or without payment. “The value of internships is in equipping the youth with the adequate work experience to make them employable,” said Naidoo.
