Struggle for jobs

2018-02-15 06:01

EVERYONE was excited about 2018. It’s the new year with new opportunities, right? Wrong!

For most of us with degrees, it’s a daily struggle to find a job in the field of our studies. It is even harder for people with no tertiary education who are the breadwinners in their homes.

The job adverts are ridiculous when entry level posts want three years of experience. How does that experience fall from the sky?

Secondly, the salaries are ghastly. It’s amazing how companies assume that we don’t know our worth in society.

No one is saying give us millions but we have families and responsibilities too. Pay us fairly. Thirdly, I feel people over 55 must retire. How does a company become dynamic when old energy is taking up space in an environment?

I urge society to have some feelings for the youth. Give us an opportunity and don’t simply say “no vacancies” to us rudely on the phone. Help us grow. Don’t judge us on skin colour.
