Swim the extra mile at Lake Eland

2016-10-27 06:00

LAKE Eland, a popular tourist attraction in Oribi, celebrates it’s 10th open swim event at the end of the month.

The game reserve comprises 2500 hectare of diverse ecosystems of bushveld, grassland, coastal forest and wetland this natural landscape.

Lake Eland received it’s name from owners, Trevor and Eric Dunstone after they discovered that the lake on the nature reserve is shaped like the eland common in bushman paintings.

The lake will be used for the 10th anniversary of the South Coast Lake Eland Mile on 30 October.

It is one of only two open water swims that take place in KwaZulu-Natal and caters for swimmers of all abilities and distances ranging from 500m to three kilometres.

“This Midmar Mile qualifier has been an integral part of developing swimming from a fundamental level with our St Martin de Porres initiative. This has been instrumental in uplifting swimming in the community,” said organiser Cheree Duffner.

“On the elite side we have been developing national age group qualifiers for the past 20 years, with the South Coast Lake Eland Mile being the platform for supporting this and contributing towards our success.”

Duffner said the event has attracted current Olympians Michelle Weber, Chad Ho and Mathew Meyer as well past Olympians Troyden Prinsloo and many international representatives.

Whether you’re a first-time swimmer, a pool swimmer, a triathlete looking for some extra swimming training or an experienced open water swimmer, there is an event for everyone.

With only a few weeks to go, the organisers are encouraging swimmers in all categories to complete their online entries.
