Taxi fares to increase from July

2016-06-23 06:00

TAXI fares are to increase from 1 July. This was announced by the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) recently.

Gamalakhe Taxi Association has announced it will increase the fare by R1 travelling from Gamalakhe to the Port Shepstone CBD and from Gamalakhe to Margate.

Other associations in and around South Coast have also announced a fare increase, but at the time of going to press by how much was unavailable.

Santaco spokesperson Mandla Mzelemu said each taxi association decides its own increase.

Mzelemu said the decision to increase taxi fare every year was taken by the council in 2012.

This was to avoid issues similar to those that arose in previous years.

“In previous years we had issues with regards to when fares should be increased.

“Associations felt that, whenever fuel increases, taxi fares should also increase and that was becoming a problem for commuters as the fees never decreased when fuel prices decreased,” said Mzelemu.

He said council took the decision that a fare increase will only take place every 1 July.

“Throughout South Africa taxi fares increase depending on the amount the association decides
on, also depending on the
distance of the taxi route,” said Mzelemu.
