Telkom responsible for water leak

2016-03-24 06:00

A WATER leak, which has been in existence since the beginning of March is due to a “leaking Telkom pipe”.

This is according to the Ugu District Municipality.

Karen Smith, who lives in Tucker Avenue, Uvongo said she noticed the leak on 2 March.

“I called our plumber to have a look if it’s our pipes, but he said it’s on Ugu’s side,” she said.

“I then phoned Ugu to report it and was told that someone will attend to it during the day. Nobody responded,” said Smith.

She then called the call centre again the following day and was assured that a plumber will be dispatched.

“I have called numerous times since and still nobody has been sent out.”

Smith said this type of service is unacceptable as we are in a drought and are constantly told to save water.

Spokesperson for Ugu District Municipality, France Zama, said an Ugu team of technicians visited the site on 3 March,

“They closed off all the Ugu valves and discovered there was still water leaking.

“After digging up it was discovered that a Telkom pipe was leaking,” he said.

More technicians were sent out to verify this and the affected company will then be informed to ensure the leak is repaired urgently, he added.

When the Fever asked how it was possible for a Telkom pipe to leak, the publication was told that the cables sometimes absorb water from the ground.

“When the cables cannot absorb any more water, it escapes through the ground again.”
