A COMMUNITY organisation focusing on early childhood development, organic farming and after-school educational programmes in Mtwalume was awarded at the Impumelelo Social Innovations Award for its contribution to development in the area recently.

The awards evaluate over 100 projects all over the country targeting sectors such as health care, education, renewable energy, job creation, early childhood development, rural development and the empowerment of women and the girl child.

Thanda’s solar-powered community centre in Mtwalume serves as the central hub for the organisation’s operations and houses the municipality’s only library, science lab, and art centre and is open 365 days a year.

It also serves as an agricultural resource centre for farmers and is used to host trainings for teachers and other NPOs.

The award was received by Thanda Executive Director Angela Larkan, with the programme director, Tyler Howard and general manager Sbusiso Msimango.

“We’ve come a long way since we started in 2008. Thanda would not be here today if it weren’t for our amazing team who work tirelessly every day to ensure we are offering the highest level of programming for our growing and thriving community.

“We are incredibly proud and honoured to have been selected for this award among so many worthy organisations,” said Larkan. - Supplied.
