Thank you, Lynn Hitchcock

MEDIA 24 Local News was fortunate to have had to the pleasure to work with seasoned and passionate sub-editor Lynn Hitchcock.

Unfortunately for the Media 24 team, the time has come for Lynn to switch off her computer, kick off her shoes and enjoy retirement – and those shoes, for us, will be very difficult to fill.

Lynn has spent years in newsrooms around KZN and is well known in the industry. She joined the local team 15 years ago and has since made her mark in the company.

Her local news career started with the South Coast Fever¬ team where she was responsible for training journalists, subbing copy and editing Upper Coast Fever (now Amanzimtoti Fever) and East Griqualand Fever.

She quickly became a right-hand to the then editor and established herself in the community newspaper industry. I had the privilege of working with Lynn from 2014 when she became the group sub-editor of all Fever, Echo and Weekly titles.

In the few years that I got to work with Lynn, I have learnt more about the English language than I did at college. She is always ready to teach and explain the importance of fact-checking. Lynn was able to work with everyone in the newsroom – even the “know-it-all” millennials. The training and advice she has offered is invaluable and she helped many journalists, myself included, grow in their careers. She has worked with many journalists who today proudly have the editor title next to their names.

Many Fever readers who called the office would have been assisted by Lynn – whether they were looking for extra copies of the newspaper or wanting to put an advert, she made sure customer service was a priority.

General Manager of KZN News Neil Tapinos said: “Thank you for the passion and commitment you gave to each and every one of our products during the many years you spent with the group. Your attention to detail and determination to get things right will most definitely be missed.

“Most of all, your willingness to go the extra mile will be remembered – not only were you the sub-editor, but you were also our building and office manager, marketing manager, personal assistant, fact-checker, and the list goes on.”

To Lynn Hitchcock, we wish you only good things and please do enjoy your retirement. The newsroom will never be the same again.

I also guarantee this copy was subbed by Lynn Hitchcock.
