That’s a wrap ARESHNI pERUNAL areshni perumal Being a nineties baby

IT seems like it was just the other day when it was the beginning of the year, now all of a sudden we’re planning how we are going to spend December. You know it’s December when you cannot recognise the morning grumps anymore.

How many times have you seen people singing along to the music playing in their car or moving to the beat in the middle of the intersection at 7am on a regular day. It’s the most beautiful thing watching people dwell in compassion.

We often hear people speak about festive cheer or the Christmas spirit and we instantly think it’s party time. It is. but not completely.

This is the time of the year where you sit back and take a look at everything you have achieved. Maybe you’ve had a setback, but if you are reading this you would say you’ve made a comeback, heck.

It’s been a rough year for many, but let nothing stop you. Not everyone has a family or food every day or even a roof over their heads. Many people have started initiatives to help communities or certain groups of people.

Just this week I spoke to a young girl, who was collecting money to buy sanitary towels for less fortunate girls.

There are also drives that help children to collect necessary stationery so they can be educated comfortably, the Toy Story campaign for those children who have never had a toy. This is what it’s about, bringing cheer to others.

Everything changes with the holidays. People start to get a little more daring with their dress code, maybe a different style, something they have never tried. I’ve heard people say it’s the silly season, so why not dye your hair pink or maybe polka dot.

My grandmother takes the festive season to whole new level with her Christmas cakes. I understand the traditional Christmas cake recipe consists of mixed fruit being soaked in brandy, but I often find myself wanting to fall off to sleep after eating a slice of my grandmother’s Christmas cake.

If you think about it most of us always have exciting stories about something that had happened during the holidays.

Most of December on the South Coast is beautiful and sunny so days on the beach are a must. Picnics, nature trails, swimming in the ocean, that burning sensation from being sunburned or how you listened to your younger brother and tried to roller skate now you have to deal with scraped knees and all that pain. Okay, I’m a little dramatic.

The holidays isn’t something that you could just sum up in one column, there are so many aspects to it. From that warm fuzzy feeling it brings to all that anxiety of a chapter ending. Make something of it, say it’s going to be the most amazing December and make sure it is. You can do anything. You just need a solid game plan.

Life is like a football field you’re the striker, yes, you have defenders, but your opposition will still try to attack, prepare wisely and then step back and watch the spectators in the stands of your life cheer with pride.

It has been a fair year so far with many lessons learnt. A positive mind is the greatest tool.

And bad phases are growing pains. Remember everything good, may the beautiful memories of 2016 never fade and that’s a wrap - wishing all of you an amazing festive season.
