The magic of the Umtamvuna

2016-06-09 06:00

TWO weeks ago, we and our Umtamvuna Area Committee held a meet-and-greet for members, media and council representatives from the Pont.

During the extremely scenic barge trip, we were addressed by knowledgeable locals in terms of the amazing maritime history of the Port Edward coastline and the legendary off road biker Alfie Cox and his team spoke about their Matat2Pont event that is coming up.

There is no doubt that the Umtamvuna, its generous lagoon and the impressive arched bridge provides a wonderful backdrop for water sport enthusiasts, campers, outdoor junkies, stunning wedding venues and for the more energetic, ventures into the eco wonderland of the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve.

This valley that borders onto the Eastern Cape has to be an Eden on the South Coast and what a majestic southern gateway to our province. With the new road coming from the Eastern Cape I have no doubt that nature based, oceanic and cultural orientated tourism will grow in this area.

When we disembarked at sunset, a local youth group with all the fine trimmings of traditional Zulu dress entertained the group as a large boma fire was lit prior to supper being served under the stars and the full moon.

Being at a place like this proved to me a momentary and memorable respite from the “out there” realities of day to day living. No wonder this magical part of our province has a loyal following of visitors and leisure lovers.

It is also interesting to note that the waters of this river system are ideal for rowing and one Eastern European country uses the Umtamvuna as a training venue for its Olympic rowing team. No wonder that this idyllic part of our destination has also been used as a popular film location.

If we are the paradise of the Zulu kingdom the Umtamvuna and surrounds has to be a wonderful exemplar of that slogan.
