A LOCAL theatre group will be representing the province at the National Arts Festival, being held in Grahamstown from June 28 to July 8.

The crew from Emuhle All Artists stunned judges at the KZN Provincial Theatre Festival, held in Pietermaritzburg last week, where they won first place after performing a play titled The Spirit of Oliver.

As the name suggests, the play memoirs the life, or rather the spirit, of struggle icon Oliver Tambo.

It details his journey from being a rural boy from Bizana to being introduced to politics while at the University of Fort Hare.

Play writer and director, Bongani Baai, said that the play’s secret recipe lay in its ability to tap into the abstract side of Tambo’s biography.

“We wanted to articulate the true spirit of Oliver and not just his physical journey. We incorporate poetry, music, and drama in our storytelling and we allow everyone to be able to relate to the story and find their inner spirit of Oliver,” said Baai.

Emuhle All Artists is a local drama organisation that was formed in 2000 and has produced renowned actors like Pretty Ncayiyane and Siphesihle Cele.

The organisation hold auditions annually, to recruit new talent, and the group that is going to the Arts Festival this year has been with the organisation since 2007.

Baai said that, although this is not their first appearance at the Arts Festival, this year they were particularly excited by the power in the story that they were delivering.

“We are excited to be bringing a different side of Oliver Tambo’s history undocumented before,” Baai said.
