THREE people are in police custody for fraud and theft after robbing an elderly woman at an ATM in Port Shepstone last Thursday, November 15. The suspects appeared at the Port Shepstone Magistrate Court on Monday and the case was remanded to November 26. According to police, the 64-year-old woman was processing a transaction at an ATM at about 2.30 pm when she was distracted by an unknown man who pretended to help her. He then took her card out of the machine and jumped into a VW Polo and drove off. Lazer911 was alerted and immediately an SOS Whatsapp group was informed. Members of the community together with Lazer911 and SAPS law enforcement did their utmost to track down the getaway car. “K9 Umkomaas arrested all three suspects in Umkomaas . They were found in possession of bank cards and cash and were charged with fraud and theft,” said Port Shepstone Police spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge. The stolen money amounting to R5000, was returned to the victim. Basil Lanka of Lazer911 commended the swift response rate from policing groups and the public.
