LAST Saturday, eight World Karate Federation (WKF) Ugu karate region-affiliated dojos from Scottburgh to Margate took part in a “spring tournament” at Port Shepstone Secondary.

The dojos are also affiliated to Karate KwaZulu-Natal and Karate South Africa (KSA).

White to black belts ranging in ages from five to 16 competed for medal placings.

Sensei Rodney Govender, chief referee from Karate KwaZulu-Natal officiated as well as Shihan Andy Bekker from Durban.

Port Shepstone sensei Frank Moodley said their presence lent credence and knowledge to the event.

“WKF Ugu karate region have, since 2013, held two tournaments a year to encourage young kareteka on the coast to learn the disciplined martial art of karate.

“For the first time the higher grades - brown and black belts - opened the tournament, thus enabling the novice grades to strive with hard work to achieve this level,” said Moodley.

He added it was pleasing to see the camaraderie among the clubs and students.

“Great improvement in the standard of karate and outstanding behaviour and discipline shown by all,” said Moodley. – Supplied.
