Transport development to begin

2018-07-12 06:01

THE long waited half a billion rand development of an Intermodal Transport Facility with retail and commercial opportunities in the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is expected to start soon.

This is in line with plans to convert the existing Port Shepstone taxi rank into an integrated, “intermodal” facility as part of the urban renewal programme.

The first phase would feature the existing bus rank being converted into a temporary taxi rank at an estimated cost of R10 million.

Ray Nkonyeni municipality manager Max Mbili said the municipality had appointed the service provider and the construction of the new rank is expected to start this month.

“Although there were some delays, a development entitlement agreement has been signed, and we are confident that the entire project would be completed in 2020,”said Mbili

Although there were some delays, a development entitlement agreement has been signed.

Eighty-two percent of major retailers including food franchises had already committed in leasing the space.

The mall will also include parking on the mezzanine level with access from Ryder Street and provision for informal traders and kiosks outside. The idea is to combine all commuter services, even with the possibility of rail in the long term.

The municipality will retain ownership of the land.

However, long-term leases would be granted to some public and private partner-ships.

The project is expected to create close to a thousand employment opportunities and a boost to the local economy.
