A 17-YEAR-OLD teenager appeared in Hibberdene Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Investigations are ongoing and the boy may also be charged with house-breaking and murder.

The story goes back to December 2015, when a woman, Ntombifuthi Ntokoza Luthuli (28), and her male friend were in a car near Mfazazana location near Hibberdene.

A group of people approached the vehicle and then started firing shots.

The male occupant in the car managed to flea, but returned later and found the woman had been shot dead.

Sergeant Eugene Blankenberg from Hibberdene SAPS received information and investigations began.

Blankenberg, Constable Dugmore Mavundla, Constable Kavish Naidoo and members of a security company in Hibberdene, went to a house at Mfazazana and arrested the teenager.

He was in possession of a 306 rifle which was stolen in November 2015 during a house-breaking in Turton.

“It is suspected that the same rifle was used in the murder of Luthuli,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

On Sunday, Lieutenant-Colonel Bongani Memela, station commander of Hibberdene SAPS, Blankenberg, Mavundla and Naidoo went to the Umzinto area and arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the murder.

“He will also appear in court soon. Police also arrested a third person in connection with a theft of motor vehicle case in Scottburgh area and investigations will reveal whether he is also linked to the murder and house-breaking cases,” said Wiid.

Cluster commander, Major-General Thembi Ndlovu welcomed the arrests and thanked the members from the security company who came forward with valuable information and their assistance during the arrest.
