POVERTY remains one of the biggest challenges facing our district and in view of this, Ugu District Municipality embarked on new programmes to fight poverty that affects rural areas in the district.

One such programme is the Dress-a-Child campaign. The district, under the leadership of the mayor, Cllr Mondli Chiliza, works with local municipalities, the Department of Social Development and the Office of the Premier in identifying children, based on their needs, and assists them with school uniforms and necessities.

On Tuesday pupils from Siphakamile Primary in Bhobhoyi under Ray Nkonyeni Municipality were the beneficiaries of the Dress-a-Child campaign. A total of 30 children, identified with the help of teachers, received full school uniforms and shoes.

Other items given were 30 school bags, 10 dictionaries, boxes of sanitary towels and children’s rights posters for each class and food parcels were given to children who go to bed on empty stomachs.

Siphakamile is one of many schools in the district that have benefited from this programme.

Our special programmes unit has been to all local municipalities under Ugu, including Ray Nkonyeni, Umuziwabantu, Umdoni and Umzumbe.
