THE Ugu Athletics club (UAC) joined Africa to celebrate the Mandela Centenary Year through the Mandela Day Marathon on August 26.

Athletes from all over Africa converged in Pietermaritzburg to participate in the iconic race, starting in Imbali and finishing at the Howick Capture Site.

Runners with high pedigrees came from Ethopia, Kenya, Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Local athletes said the presence of these athletes gave South African runners little hope of winning the race, based on historical performances.

UAC was represented by 50 runners who participated in the following distances: 31 participated in the 42,2 km, 16 participated in the 21,1 km and three participated in the 10 km.

Club chair Pardon Mathebula said the club’s performance was good because only five runners either did not start or did not finish their races. “This iconic marathon has, according to records, grown in leaps and bounds; this year, participants numbered over 24 000, compared to just over 5 000 in 2012.

“It continues to grow despite its toughness and being characterised by struggle hills of about 16 km,” said Mathebula.
