Ugu cuts RNM water over payment dispute

WATER supply to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality buildings was cut this week due to disputes over bill payments.

RNM municipal spokesperson Maxwell Mbili said on Tuesday that the dispute over billing dates back to the time of the Hibiscus Coast Municipality and the municipality is still in talks with Ugu on how to resolve it.

“It is not that the money is not there. However, we had to be clear on what we are paying for because at the end of the day, we will also be audited for payments made,” said Mbili.

“We were paying what we were comfortable with paying, however there were some disputes over certain billing that we needed clarity on,” said Mbili.

He said RNM was still in “engagements” with Ugu regarding the issue, when they received notification that their water would be cut as of February 30.

“We received a notice from Ugu stipulating their intent to cut water supply to all RNM buildings. And when the notice was given we were still engaging with Ugu about the matter and when we received the notice we took it as though Ugu was no longer interested in proceedings,” said Mbili.

“However, we are still working with Ugu to come to a resolution for this matter.

“We are not expecting the issue to disrupt any municipal processes as it should be resolved timeously,” said Mbili.
