Ugu district, better today than it was yesterday

2016-06-16 06:00

WITH every passing day since the dawn of a democratic local government dispensation, Ugu District has undoubtedly become a better place to live in and our communities have much to celebrate. Through working together we have accomplished a great deal of service delivery milestones, particularly given the immense socio-economic challenges facing the country.

Today we have created a thriving service delivery environment where communities who never had access to clean drinking water are now proud recipients of clean drinking water. Areas like Gumatane, Ncengesi and Dweshula in Umzumbe are now benefitting from the municipality’s multimillion rand bulk water infrastructure project of Umhlabatshane. We are also on track on extending sanitation services to each and every corner of the district.

The district municipality’s improved financial position serves as an indication of sound control measures being implemented by the municipality geared towards ensuring that the municipality fulfil its legislative mandate of delivering water and sanitation services to communities. This has also translated to an improved audit opinion of the municipality for the past financial year.

And with the reality of drought still upon us, plans are at an advance towards refurbishment and upgrade of our water infrastructure to enable us to be able to adequately respond to the ever increasing water demand. We have completed some phases of the upgrade at the Bhobhoyi water treatment plant which once fully completed; areas under the Hibiscus Coast municipality will enjoy an uninterrupted supply of water.

This is as a result of collective efforts by the municipalities political and administrative leadership which have yielded positive results, Ugu District Municipality is indeed better today than it was yesterday.

However, certain sectors of society often bemoan the pace of service delivery in certain areas. They should also be mindful that efforts to transform our district are a never ending process as we endeavor to undo the deep seated structural problems of service delivery. But the gains that have been achieved over the years cannot be deliberately ignored as this will cause damage to all efforts made.

Making Ugu district a better place remains the responsibility of all of us. We all have a role to play in creating the district we want to live in today and for future generations to inherit.
