Ugu District Municipality inaugurates councillors

UGU District Municipality is to initiative a new era of service delivery to be overseen by the newly inaugurated Ugu District Council of 35 councillors for the 2016-2021 term.

The new council to lead the municipality for the next five years was sworn in yesterday at the Port Shepstone Civic­ Centre.

The councillors vowed under oath to serve the community with honour and transparency and adhere to the task they have been entrusted with - that is to ensure the advancement of service delivery throughout the district.

At the inaugural meeting the new mayor, deputy mayor, speaker of council and the executive committee, to lead the district’s service delivery implementing committees, was announced.

The new council will ensure the continuation of bringing and maintaining water and sanitation services and advance initiatives to continue the fight against the triple challenge of unemployment, poverty and inequality.The meeting was attended by the MEC for Social Development and District­ Operation Sukuma Sakhe champion, Weziwe Thusi, among other­ dignitaries, new councillors’ family members and the public who came in numbers to witness the inauguration.

The first council meeting of the new district council will be on Thursday, 1 September at the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality­ council chambers.
