The World Karate Federation (WKF) and Ugu Karate Region held their annual winter tournament last Saturday, June 30. Eligible karate clubs that participated had to be affiliated with The World Karate Association.

Participating clubs geared up and got ready to compete in the tournament from all over the South Coast. Teams represented Margate, Port Shepstone, Umzinto and Scottburgh.

The winter programme is a development programme showcasing different styles of karate shown by the kareteka, the interaction between the different styles and Karate Dojos. “Competitive karate is definitely improving and raising the standard of local kareteka, students were able to achieve WKF Ugu karate colours, karate KwaZulu-Natal colours and with two students achieving Protea colours,” said Shihan Frank Moodley. Ages varied from six to 17 years, and categories phased from white belt to black belt.

“This tournament is held annually to promote development karate on the Hibiscus Coast and a team from this tournament will be selected to represent WKF Ugu Karate Region at the upcoming Karate KwaZulu-Natal Development Tournament and ultimately the Karate South Africa development tournament,” said Moodley.
