UGU District Municipality is offering a cash reward of R 300 000 in exchange for information that will lead to the successful arrest and prosecution of any individual responsible for the vandalism and tampering with the municipal water and sanitation infrastructure during the recent water crisis

Many parts of the South Coast were left without water for as long as three weeks when workers allegedly affiliated to South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) were involved in an alleged illegal strike.

He said the municipality can confirm that it has lost millions during this period due to lawless incidents of tampering and vandalism which necessitated costly emergency action to be undertaken for continued water supply to the affected communities.

According to municipal manager DD Naidoo, an urgent request was made to Police Minister Bheki Cele and KZN MEC for Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda to bring in a team to lead the investigation and ensure that the culprits were brought to book.

“The community spirit depicted by the members of the public during the crisis period is acknowledged and appreciated and the municipality. Thank you to all those community members who were the municipality’s eyes and ears on the ground and who reported all suspicious behaviour in the vicinity of all our water and sanitation infrastructure,” said Naidoo.

Individuals with information that will ensure successful closure of this case can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the Port Shepstone branch commander Colonel Khumalo on 082 339 8405.

The municipality, together with the law enforcement agencies, will ensure that the culprits are brought to book and face the might of the law as their actions caused much unwarranted distress to the Ugu community.
