ON Saturday October 28, Ugu District Municipality and the Department of Arts and Culture held its 2018 Ugu Theatre Festival in Umzinto under the Umdoni Municipality.

Theatre acting enthusiasts from all over the district attended showcasing their talent and chatting to international theatre-industry guests.

Emuhle All Artists founder and director of the festival Bongani Baai said he was amazed by the turnout.

“We were not sure if the rural community would attend a theatre festival, since theatre for years has been undermined and seen as just a hobby. This year’s festival proved that theatre has grown,” said Baai.

Attending the festival was Umziwabantu Arts Forum chairperson, Chaklass Xaba, who said the festival is much needed in his municipality and asked organisers to take the festival to Umuziwabantu next year.

“The event is much needed where we come from - its skills development component covers almost everything that previously disadvantaged the youth’s needs. The programme has unified us from both primary arts and secondary arts.

“We have productions ready to be performed.

“We need more professionals like the Ugu Theatre Festival team to lead us through mentoring like this,” said Xaba.

UTF ambassador Pretty Ncayiyana, Scandals actress, thanked Ugu and the Department of Arts and Culture for supporting and believing in the youth.

Ncayiyana said it is important to give viable skills development to the youth while promoting entrepreneurship.

The winners at the festival were first, Madezz Theatre Production, Emzini Arts Youth production, second and Abenzi Bokuhle Youth Arts, third.

For the best script Nkosinathi Khumalo took the award and Khonzi Nyawose won best director. Thembelihle Mbuthuma won best actress and in the male category Sphamandla Hlongwa took the award.
