THE South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) has threatened to “go to war” with Ugu and Ray Nkonyeni municipalities if its grievances are not addressed. Employees from both municipalities are embarking on a march today that was announced at a press briefing on Monday.

Samwu district chairman Xolani Shinga said Ugu employees demand payouts from their group life insurance
policy contributions. In December, Ugu employees downed tools in protest, demanding the payouts, leaving some areas without water and other services.

It was also revealed at the briefing that Ray Nkonyeni employees are unhappy with the outcome of job evaluations.

Ugu Samwu chairman Mthandeni Ngcobo said after a meeting with the late Ugu mayor Tolomane Myayiza in December, they were only paid for five years.

“We should be paid for 19 years. We now demand the balance of 14 years’ pension, plus interest,” said Ngcobo.

Shinga said almost 99% of municipal employees are Samwu members, which means most employees are marching today.
