Unregistered car guards a concern

HOUSE break-ins in Uvongo declined in July, but the area’s crime and safety forum is concerned that four streets have become hot spots.

Sector two - Riveira Crescent, Nice Terrace, Grindewald Terrace and Garden Terrace - was where most of the activity took place.

“We will have to concentrate on our ‘block watch’ patrols on Saturdays for the coming month as most break-ins took place over the weekend. No incidents were reported on Wednesdays and Fridays, said the forum’s Ernest Booysen.

Concerns about illegal car guards, who are suspected to be involved in drug peddling and house break-ins were also raised at the meeting which took place at the library recently.

On 26 July, Gert Ludge represented the forum at a meeting between SAPS and Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority where action steps had been laid down to address the problem.

“All car guards will have to be registered within the next two months after which non-registered persons will be arrested and seriously dealt with,” said Booysen.

“This problem should be something of the past towards the end of the year,” he added.
