DIARISE 5 and 6 March 6 because that is voter registration weekend, in preparation for the upcoming municipal elections, and a time to check your details.

Simphiwe Yeni, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) regional manager said campaigning has started and field workers are well on their way with meetings in various communities to encourage people to register.

“We have even gone to schools where over 1 000 teenagers have registered. We also have drives on social media so we are able to reach more youngsters,” he added.

“Your vote is your voice. The councillor you elect is the person who may look after your area,” he said.

Yeni said young people must register so they can voice what improvements they would like to see in their community.

“If young people want to see sports fields, clinics, libraries and the like in their area, they must register,” he said.

Parents must encourage their children to register and transport them to a registration centre if they are able to said Yeni.

“Young adults need to be educated on issues of government. If we fail to educate children on how the country is run, we are failing our democracy,” added Yeni.

South African citizens who are over the age of 16 and have a valid green, bar-coded ID book may register.

You may also use your smartcard ID or valid temporary identity certificate to register.

You will only be able to vote when you are 18, and no other forms of identification are accepted, or copies thereof. Proof of residence is not required.
