IF you would like to witness some of the country’s and the world’s best water skaters perform, get down to Umtamvuna River Lodge on 25 Febraury.That is where and when wakeskaters will compete for the title of the 2017 Backyard Sessions Champion. “This year sees current WWA World Champion and Wakeskate Tour Champion Andrew Pastura from the USA bringing his expertise to the South Coast along with three-time IWWF Ladies World Champion, Zuzana Vrablova,” said organiser Matti Buys.They will only compete, but also guide the local ladies in getting in the water and ultimately on a wakeskate. International wakeskaters such as Andrew Roehm and Cole Kraiss together with Port Edward’s Matti Buys and Kaylib Louw, will feature at the event.“This year has an even better twist on it with the introduction of the junior divisions.”Last year the Umtamvuna River Lodge noticed a huge growth in the participation of youngsters in the sports of wakeboarding and wakeskating as well as an impressive development in the level of riding from these children. “One example that been of Creston High’s Kiera Booker who in the past seven months of wakeskating has shown immense growth.”After competing in his first competition in Johannesburg earlier this month he will return home to ride in front of friends and family in the junior division. “Hopefully this is a start of more to come from the talented South Coast riders.”Other entertainment during the day will be children’s slides and a skate ramp. Food and drinks are available at the lodge.The event starts at 9am and will run throughout the day until the start of pro finals at 5pm. Entry is R30 for adults and R20 for kids at the gate.
