What is Ugu hiding?

2018-02-01 06:00

I REFER to the report in the Fever last week with the heading “Another clean audit for Umzumbe”.

A few weeks ago there was a press release from the Shared Services Audit Committee used by local municipalities falling under the Ugu District Municipality.

Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni and Umuziwabantu as well as Umzumbe, which were featured in your report, received clean or unqualified audit reports which seem to indicate they run their financial affairs on a sound basis and provide reasonable services to the public.

For unimaginably obscure reasons no mention is made of the result of the audit of Ugu District Council itself. Ugu District Council is the palpably poorest purveyor of service delivery in this group of municipalities.

Is there something Ugu does not want the public to know? Remember this is not a report from KPMG or Deloittes but from one of the straightest and most impeccable Auditor’s General in the list of distinguished office holders of this critical post.

EDITOR REPLIES:

Ray Nkonyeni, Umdoni and Umuziwabantu were not featured in the said article as erroneously indicated by Dave Snashall. The article was only about Umzumbe Municipality, not about Ugu or any other municipality under Ugu. Umzumbe has received four clean audits in a row, which is a rare feat for a rural municipality in this province and their story deserves to be told.
