2017-05-11 06:01

A WOMAN died on Monday evening after allegedly pushing her 10-year-old son into the Umtamvuna River near Port Edward and then jumping in herself.

It was initially not clear whether the 34-year-old woman wanted to commit suicide and wanted to die together with her child, but the boy survived after swimming to the shore.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant- Colonel Zandra Wiid said the Port Shepstone Search and Rescue Unit were called to Umtamvuna River at 8.30pm to help find the woman.

“Police were told that the woman had first pushed her son into the water and jumped in herself. The child, however, managed to swim to a boat-launching site and was attended to by paramedics who also went to the scene,” said Wiid.

Warrant Officers Francois Pretorius, Marc Wiid, Gabriel Nel and Rommel da Rosa and Constable Zozo Mpofana and NSRI Port Edward started searching the water in the dark for the woman.

“After hours of searching, the woman was finally located at 12.30am and was brought to shore,” said Wiid.

NSRI Port Edward station commander, John Nicholas confirmed that the woman was found dead.

Police are investigating and an inquest docket has been opened.
