IN a time where global political standards and economic structure become two of the main factors, thousands of families all over the world are forced to flee.

On June 20, the world came together, and took a stand with refugees all over the world, as they observed World Refugee day.

World Refugee Day began with the United Nations Refugee Agency, who launched a petition #WithRefugees. According to the United Nations Refugees initiative, the petition began to send a message to governments, for fairness and equality among refugees.

“World Refugee Day seeks to promote social cohesion among refugees, the migrant community, and citizens while highlighting the mutual benefits of migration and the responsibility of protection that South Africa has towards refugees. In this regard, the commemorations seek to encourage co-operation among partners, to minimise the risk of migration and the vulnerabilities of asylum seekers and refugees,” said the Department of home affairs minister Malusi Gigaba on the department’s official website.
