MANDENI Mayor Siphesihle Zulu introduced Improc (PTY) LTD to Ward 1 residents recently. The contractor will build 500 houses in the area, building 41 houses each month, said Zulu.

He said ward councillor Khiphinkunzi Dube and the project steering committee would be consulted regularly about the progress of the housing project.

Zulu condemn people who steal material from sites established for such projects as they slow down the project and ultimately affect the quality of the work being done.

The mayor said in addition to the housing project, construction of a road from Mbizimbelwe to Phungula, and from Bendle to Ward 9 would commence in June and that the contractor uQombothi Development had been awarded the job.

He said as an effort to alleviate poverty in the area, people employed in the Community Works Programme would increase from 22 when 32 more are recruited, adding that this would be done in consultation with the ward councillor.

In closing, Zulu urged Ward 1 residents to take part in sporting activities, especially young people so that they could refrain from drug and substance abuse and criminal activity.
