GROVE End Volleyball Club ousted Manor in straight sets (2-0) in the final of the Caminamix Services-sponsored KwaDukuza Volleyball Association Corporate KO Cup played before a huge crowd at the association courts on Wednesday night.

Neil Perumal set the courts ablaze to give Grove End a commanding 12-7 lead in the opening set. Manor, who started somewhat defensively, turned on the heat midway into the set with Ahmed Esaack and Neeraj Bageloo combining powerfully upfront to level the scores at 15-15.

Despite the crowd on the stand behind the “under dogs”, Manor, the Grove End lads were resilient, picking up everything thrown at them. The superb cover-work of Bevlin Thaver and Preggie Pillay frustrated the Manor lads who committed numerous unforced errors.

Despite an array of substitutes on the touchline, Manor continued in the hope of upsetting the rhythm of their rivals, but Grove End marched on relentlessly clinching the 1st set 25-20.

Gideon Pillay and Sandile “Mr. Basketball” Mthiyane were introduced into the fray at the start of the 2nd set. Despite his burly size, Mthiyane sprawled across the courts to retrieve the ball and keep Manor in contention for honours.

But, the corporate league champions Grove End proved their prowess yet again romping to a fluent 25-14 win to add the Caminamix Services silverware to their cabinet.

In the playoffs for 3rd spot, Frendz pulverized Teachers in straight sets (2-0) to claim a podium finish. Isaac Abraham, president of KwaDukuza Volleyball Association expressed his sincere thanks to Yaseen Ebrahim (CEO of Caminamix Services) for his generous sponsorship in promoting corporate volleyball in KwaDukuza.

Meanwhile, Frendz notched up their 4th straight win in the KDVA First Division ranks after beating defending champions, Sunbrook in straight set (2-0) on Thursday night.

Darnall’s hopes of claiming the KDVA First Division League title was dented when they were beaten (25-22; 23-25; 15-9) earlier by Sunbrook. Cool Leaders claimed 2nd spot on the log standing after beating MOB (25-18; 25-17).

Grove End cemented their position at the summit of the EZE’S Electrical Premier League log table with a hard fought 2-1 win against former champions, KSST. Grove End won the first set convincingly (25-19), but KSST returned the favour after winning the 2nd set 25-23.

In the 3rd and decisive set, Grove End were all the rage romping to a fluent 15-7 win to maintain their unblemished record since the start of the 2015 season. Randsons pulled off a shock 27-25, 25-20 win against Manor.

In other volleyball news, KDVA will host a council meeting tonight (Wednesday), May 27 at The Quartz Conference Centre in Stanger Manor at 7pm. Clubs must be represented by two delegates.

The draw for the Ralph Reuben memorial knockout tournament (which is scheduled to get underway on 4 June) will take place at the council meeting.
