GUZANA Secondary School of Shakaskraal was crowned Ilembe Coca Cola under 15 champions after beating Isibanisezwe of Maphumulo (4-3) on penalties at the Stanger High School Ground on Saturday, 6 June.

Nine schools comprising of Tshelenkosi, Velangezwi, Sotobe, Guzana, Shekembula, St. Cyprians, Ezithabani, Isibanisezwe and ML Sultan Secondary contested the Ilembe Under-15 title.

Matches were played in three pools with the winner in each pool automatically advancing to the semi-final stages of the tournament and the second best team making up the fourth semi-finalist.

Tshelenkosi emerged winners in pool A after beating Velangezwi and Sotobe by the same margin (2-1). Velangezwi kept their slender semi-final hopes alive after beating Sotobe 2-1 to finish runners-up in pool A.

Guzana kicked off their campaign in pool B with an emphatic 4-0 win against St. Cyprians and followed it up with a 4-0 routing of Shekembula, after leading 2-0 at halftime. Shekembula came back strongly, beating St. Cyprians 2-0 to secure second spot in pool B.

Isibanisezwe hammered Ezithabani (4-0) in their opening fixture before clobbering ML Sultan 4-0 to claim pole position in pool C. Sultan grabbed second spot in pool C with a fluent 3-0 against Ezithabani and emerged the second best team, thereby booking their place in the semi-finals.

Sultan’s joy was shortlived after they were hammered 5-0 by Guzana in the first semi-final. Phumlani Bila and Sihle Mngadi scored a brace each before Khanya Nyali wrapped up proceedings for Guzana.

The second semi-final was virtually heading towards a penalty shootout before Sbonelo Cele grabbed a late winner for Isibanisezwe against Tshelenkosi. It was an entertaining final between Guzana and Isibanisezwe with both teams creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities. But, after a goalless stalemate at the end of regulation time the outcome of the match had to be decided on penalties.

It was a fiercely contested penalty shoot-out with both teams converting their first three spot-kicks to make the score-line 3-3. The Maphumulo based-Isibanisezwe outfit shot themselves in the foot after missing their fourth spot-kick. Guzana scored all four spot-kicks to take a narrow 4-3 lead.

Isibanisezwe’s woes continued after they missed their fifth spot-kick resulting in Guzana being crowned champions (4-3). Guzana will represent Ilembe at the KZN Coca Cola U15 Champs to be held later in the year.
