ILEMBE Cricket Union kicked off their campaign in the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union Challenge League (Stream One) with a thrilling 33-runs victory against Umzinto at the Gledhow Ground on Sunday.

The decision by Ilembe to bat first on a treacherous Gledhow pitch backfired after the top order batsmen were dismissed with only 14 runs on the board. Prineshan Govender dismissed Alveiro Nadasen (4) and Lucky Gebane (6) before Darrly Govender claimed the wicket of Steven Jacobs (2) who offered a simple catch to wicket-keeper, Vishay Singh.

Lionel Jali, making his debut for Ilembe became Pillay’s third victim after being clean bowled for 2 runs. Pillay notched up his fourth wicket after dismissing Ismail Mahomed for 4 runs. The home team were in dire straits at 38/5 in the ninth over with the extras (20) amounting more than the 18 runs scored by the top five Ilembe batsmen.

Rocky Mgobhozi was sent for an early shower after being bowled by Pillay for a duck. In the 12th over Yusuf Ismail was brilliantly caught at second slip by Darrel Govender off the bowling of Pillay for 8 runs.

Dillon Rautenbach and Bilal Ismail took the tally from 46/7 to 60/8 before Rautenbach was run out by Duffy Raghubir for 4 runs. Aaron Pillay joined Ismail at the crease at the start of the 18th over.

Bilal, using his wealth of experience kept the scoreboard ticking with hard earned singles. Pillay was clean bowled by Murseelan Govender for 7 runs. Ismail scored a painstaking 49 runs which included two fours and a six before being bowled by Govender in the 36th over.

Chasing 120 runs for victory from 50 overs (at a rate of 2,4 runs per over) the visitors were miraculously bundled out for 86 runs in the 31st over to give Ilembe a thrilling 33-runs victory. Mohamed Amin Ismail (18) and Prineshan Pillay (13) were the only batsmen to register double digits.

Man-of-the-match Bilal Ismail claimed 4/24 from 7 overs. He was brilliantly supported by Sashen Sadayan, who grabbed 2/16 from 7 overs.
