KDM gears up for Salga KZN Games

KWADUKUZA Municipality is gearing up for the 2015 South African Local Government­ Association (Salga) KwaZulu-Natal Games which will be hosted for the first time by the Ilembe District Municipality in December.

KZN is the biggest province in South Africa with the highest membership municipalities­ for Salga. It has 61 municipalities in total (10 district municipalities and one metro). The Salga KZN Games is the second biggest sporting event of this nature in the country, after the SA Games.

Its main aim is to promote social cohesion through sport and improve the lives of the youth.

The games started over 14 years ago with two codes of sport, and have grown unbelievably over the years. Today the Salga KZN Games has 15 codes in total, with over 4 000 participants.

The eThekwini Metro Municipality and the Amajuba District, Sisonke, Ugu, Umkhanyakude, Umgungundlovu, Umzinyathi, Uthukela, Uthungulu, Zululand and hosts Ilembe will be participating in the 2015 games.

KwaDukuza will start their football and netball selection process in Zone I (comprising Wards 1, 2, 3, 25 and 27) on Saturday, 6 June at the Shekembula-Sakhuxolo Sports Centre starting at 9am.

Zone 2 (comprising Wards 5, 13, 16, 17, 18 and 19) selections will take place on Sunday, 7 June at the Shakaville grounds. Zone 3 (comprising Wars 7, 10, 11, 12 and 20) selections is scheduled for 13 June at the Thembeni sports ground.

Zone 4 (comprising Wards 9, 14, 15, 24 and 26) will host their selection in netball and football on 14 June at the Melville ground.

The football and netball selections for Zone 5 (Wards 4, 6, 8, 21, 22 and 23) will take place at Shakashead on 20 June with basketball scheduled to take place at Shakaville and Stanger High.

The selections in athletics (Stanger High School), dance (Haysom Road Hall), swimming (venue to be announced), golf (Darnall Country Club), volleyball (Stanger Highl), karate (Nevas Hall), tennis (Shakaville), table tennis (Stanger Secondary), rugby (Stanger High) and boxing (Haysom Road Hall) will take place on 21 June.

The semis and finals in the 15 disciplines will take place on 28 June at Stanger­ High grounds before the final KwaDukuza squad is announced. The selected team will represent KwaDukuza in the Ilembe District Municipality Games (to be contested between KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Ndwedwe and Maphumulo) which is scheduled to take place in July and August.

At the conclusion of the Ilembe District Municipality Games a squad will be selected­ and put through their paces ahead of the Salga Games scheduled to take place in Ballito and KwaDukuza in December.
