Play Sport to focus on athletics andgt;andgt; see page 22

THE Play Sport Concept will focus on athletics throughout the second term in the hope of preparing pupils for their forthcoming school athletics meeting.

CEO of Play Sport Concept Yashin Tewary was an outstanding long distance runner in his heydays, having annexed both the junior and senior sports boy award at Stanger Manor Secondary School during his high-school career.

Having taught physical education for almost 20 years and experienced the running technique of athletes for more than two decades, Tewary said: “Children at primary school level lose a race because they tend to stop right before the finish line, instead of keeping the same running momentum near the finish line.

“The foundation phase pupils lose focus easily and look around for their team-mates instead of pressing forward towards earning a podium finish.”

Tewary also emphasised the importance of getting away on equal terms at the start.

“Children are easily distracted at the start, sometimes by their bubbling parents or teachers and at times by the sound of the gun, whistle and bell, and only get going after the opposition are already out of the starting blocks,” he said.

Tewary will be hoping to remedy these wrongs during his training sessions throughout the second term.

“You don’t have to be a professional athlete or an Olympic champion to be a successful athlete. Nor do you have to have a room full of trophies or make the front pages of the sports section.

“Children must be taught at early age that sport is important to them and they must be committed to being the best that they can be within the scope of their limitations,” he added.

“There is no doubt that sport enriches the lives of children and what they get back is what they put into their sport. Children must set high, realistic goals for themselves and train and play hard.”

“I firmly believe that Play Sport is worthwhile because the same mental skills that athletes use in achieving success in sports can be used to achieve success in other areas of their lives.”

The three fundamental mental skills that successful athletes must have include choosing and maintaining a positive attitude, maintaining a high level of self motivation and setting high, realistic goals.

Tewary said that these skills are learned and can be improved through instruction and practice.

“We begin our work with each individual by assessing their current proficiency in each of the three skills before developing a teaching plan and enhancing the specific skills that need improvement and finally we periodically assess their progress,” added Tewary.

Parents can enrol their children for Play Sport at Manor Primary School on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (from 12.45 to 1.30pm or from 1.30pm to 2.15pm or from 2pm to 2.45pm) and on Saturdays (from 11.30am to 12.15pm or from 12.15pm to 1.30pm).

Those interested in enrolling their children are requested to contact Tewary on 084 357 9552.

Meanwhile, the Stanger Pre-Primary School have welcomed the Play Sport Concept at their school since 21 April.

Lessons are held during school hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays (from 8.30am to 9.15am)
