DARREL Shanmagum ousted Ashley Haripersaad in the final of the Nine Pillay and Family-sponsored KwaDukuza Darts Association (KDDA) singles tournament held at The Quartz in Stanger Manor on Wednesday night.

Jerry Govender, who emerged runners-up with Vinesh Geanballey in the KDDA doubles tournament a fortnight ago suffered a shock quarter-final exit at the hands of Haripersaad after going down 2-0.

Doubles team-mate Geanballey, who beat Devan Gounden in straight sets in the 2nd round, suffered a similar fate after going down 2-1 to Justin Naidoo in the quarters.

Haripersaad proved that his quarter-final victory against Govender was no fluke after notching up an impressive 2-0 win against Naidoo in the semi-finals to book his place in the final.

In the bottom half of the draws, Jodie Naidoo stunned the more experienced Yogan Pillay, winning 2-0 to secure a semi-final berth against Shanmagum, who sent Terrence Subban reeling of the tournament with fluent 2-0 win.

Shanmagum proved too classy for Jodie Naidoo in the semi-finals romping to a fluent 2-0 win to set up a mouth-watering final against Haripersaad.

Shanmagum got off to a flying start and was all the rage in the first set cantering to a comfortable victory. In the second set, Haripersaad stole a march on his rival in the hope of levelling the scores at 1-1 and pushing the game into a third and decisive set.

But, Shanmagum quickly brought his tally down to 130 and stunned his opponent with a three-dart close.

He notched up a triple 20 (60) with his first dart, a single 20 with his second dart and received a standing ovation after closing with a bull’s eye on his third dart to annex the Nine Pillay and Family-sponsored singles title.
