A SUCCESSFUL drug awareness campaign for the community was held at Shakaskraal Primary School recently.

The event was organised by local GP Dr Nivasha Naidoo with guest speaker, president of the International Narcotics Control Board for the United Nations, Dr LL Naidoo, who shared a wealth of information on topics, including how to prevent your children from becoming addicted to substances, how to treat addiction and how to maintain sobriety.

He also explained the brain damage caused by drugs as well as how to repair this damage.

“This talk is was very valuable to the community in order to curb the current problems we are facing with drugs,” said Dr Nivasha.

The audience was then invited to join support groups that will be run as a free service to the community, as many find it difficult to deal with their problems due to poor socio-economic circumstances.

The next talk will be held at the end of June and will focus on strengthening the family unit.

She thanked the chairperson of Shakaskraal Primary governing body and acting principal who allowed the use of the venue and assisted in the event
