ONE person was killed and three other were seriously injured in a head-on collision on the N2 near Zinkwazi in the early hours of Saturday morning.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Dylan Meyrick reports from the scene indicate that the accident occurred as one of the vehicles made a U-turn on the road. However, the exact cause is still under investigation.

“After impact one of the vehicles caught fire, a passing motorist used his own vehicle and a rope to separate the two vehicles, saving the life of the passenger of the Mercedes-Benz. The passenger and driver of the burning vehicle both sustained serious injuries and were treated on scene by IPSS Medical Rescue and EMRS before being transported to hospital for further care.

“The driver of the Mercedes was unfortunately killed on impact and was declared dead on scene. The body had to be extricated by the KwaDukuza Fire Department.”

Meyrick thanked the motorist who put his own safety at risk to save the life of another.

In a separate incident also on Saturday, a vehicle rolled while travelling south on the N2 near Mandeni.
The vehicle smashed against the bridge pillar, trapping the driver inside the wreckage, said IPSS Medical Rescue’s Samantha Meyrick.

“The driver was in a critical condition and the AMS helicopter arrived to airlift the patient. The patient was extricated by the Mandeni Rural Fire Department.”

IPSS Medical Rescue Advanced Life support attempted to stabilise the driver however, due to the extent of injuries, the driver's condition quickly deteriorated and they succumbed to their injuries.

On Thursday, 10 December two trucks were involved in a collision on the N2 north bound near Zinkwazi in the early hours of the morning.
It appeared that one truck rear ended another.

“The driver of one truck was entrapped in the wreckage and was extricated by the KwaDukuza Fire Department with assistance from IPSS Medical Rescue and EMRS.

The driver was transported to hospital by IPSS Medical Rescue with moderate injuries,” said IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst.

The road was closed for some time to complete the extrication and clear the road.
