ADESH Bageloo was ecstatic after being selected to represent the South African under 17 cricket outfit.

Adesh represented KwaZulu-Natal at the South African under 17 cricket festival held in the Western Cape from 14-18 December. Matches were played in two pools (comprising six provincial teams) on a league basis.

KwaZulu-Natal kicked off their campaign with an impressive 5-wickets victory against Eastern Province Midlands. Adesh took two brilliant catches in the game as wicket-keeper before notching up a superb half-century (60), catching the eye of the selectors on debut.

The acid test came in the game against the Eastern Province Coastal outfit and despite a gutsy 35 by Adesh, it was not enough to save KZN from defeat.

KZN bounced back to winning ways after romping to a fluent 6-wickets victory against Border. Adesh was outstanding with the gloves taking three catches and one vital stumping before scoring 42 runs.

Despite Adesh scoring 38 runs and taking two catches and a stumping, Free State proved too strong for KZN. Adesh virtually ticked all the boxes on the selectors sheet after taking 3 catches, 2 stumpings and a run out to guide KZN to an impressive 4-wickets victory against Kei.

Apart from impressing with the gloves, Adesh played a crucial role, batting at number two throughout the tournament. He was instrumental in assisting (rotating the strike) his opening partner, Abdullah Mohamed to a maiden century in the tournament.

After the 5-day tournament the moment of truth arrived when the South African under 17 squad was announced on 18 December (a week before Christmas). Adesh couldn’t hold back the tears when his name was announced in the South African squad (a Christmas present he never dreamt of).

Manager of the KZN under 17 outfit, Ronald “Tiger” Ponnsamy said: “Adesh is a brilliant wicket-keeper and an attacking batting style. If he works with his batting for longer periods he would go on to score 100s.”

“He is an excellent youngster to work with, respectful and very honest lad who has a bright future,” added Ponnsamy.
