AN intervertebral disc or “disc” as it is commonly referred to as, is the cartilaginous cushion that acts as a shock absorber to daily forces/strain/ weight that the body may require to endure.

Over a period of time these DISCS may go through wear and tear due to the daily strain resulting in the failure of these discs.

These may result in herniated or bulging discs. Treatment of a slipped disc varies depending on the location of the slipped disc and whether the slipped disc is impinging on any nerve root or not.

Slipped discs occur mostly in the lumbar spine and cervical spine.

In cases of lumbar spine slipped discs, leg pain is the most common symptom along with severe and debilitating back pain.

The pain begins in the back and may radiate down the leg all the way to the ankle.

There may also be weakness and numbness of the limbs. This pain is called sciatic pain as the sciatic nerve is the nerve that may be impinged as a result of the slipped disc. Almost all the cases of lumbar spine slipped disc occur in the L4-5 and L5-S1 region causing severe pain.

Cases of cervical spine slipped disc are quite rare as there is much less stress put on the cervical spine when compared to the lumbar spine.

However, common cervical spine areas include C4/5/6/7/ OR T1. The patient may experience numbness, tingling, weakness of the extremities.

HOW TO TREAT A SLIPPED DISC?

Chiropractic treatment has proven to be most prompt and effective, in reducing the symptoms of the patient, resulting in patients going back to work at a faster pace, improving quality of life and strengthening of the affected area.

Your chiropractor will assess the spine, carry out specific treatment in order for optimal healing to occur.
