CONDOLENCES have been pouring in from across the country and abroad after the death of struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela on April 2, after a long illness.

Madikizela–Mandela died at the age of 81 and was married to the late Nelson Mandela, with whom she had two children.

The “mother of the nation”, as she was affectionately known, made a massive contribution to the liberation struggle while the country was gripped by the apartheid regime.

She was arrested several times by the apartheid police and was also banned and kept in isolation for over 400 days. Madikizela–Mandela was at one point also the president of the ANCWL.

She is survived by her two daughters Zenani and Zinzi, and several grandchildren.
