ANC chair says disruption a first in the region

THE KwaDukuza SAPS had to disperse a rioting group that blocked the R102 near Lloyd with tyres and waste material on Sunday evening, 24 January.

It is believed the riot came about after an ANC branch general meeting - where candidates for this year’s local government elections were to be nominated - was disrupted by some disgruntled members.

ANC Greater KwaDukuza Regional chairperson, Ricardo Mthembu said the party is still investigating what led to the disruption and that an internal disciplinary process would be followed. He said he cannot make any comments with regards to what may have led to the disruption as doing so might compromise the investigation.

Mthembu said should the investigation reveal that those that disrupted the meeting were party members then they would be dealt with accordingly. Mthembu said an incident of this nature was the first to occur in the region. He said, however, he does not believe that party members would disrupt the organisation’s processes.

He said out of the 74 branches within the Greater KwaDukuza Region, 54 had concluded their nomination processes successfully. He said by the end of this week the remaining branches would have concluded their nominations.

KwaDukuza SAPS spokesperson, warrant officer Johannes Khoza said on the same day another ANC meeting was slightly interrupted in Thembeni and that a subsequent case of common assault was opened with the police.
