A 44-year-old woman convicted of raping her nephew has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for rape.

The woman was sentenced when she appeared in the Maphumulo Regional Court on Tuesday, 24 November.

According to provincial SAPS spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane, the victim, a boy aged 13, was raped at the woman’s place of residence during the month of December in 2014.

He said on 20 December 2014, the aunt had been visiting the victim’s place of residence when she asked the victim’s mother if the victim would escort her to her home because it was late.

“The victim did not come back home and on the following day he came home crying saying her aunt had raped him,” said Zwane.

He said a case of rape was opened at the Maphumulo SAPS, however, it was taken over by the KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni has welcomed the sentence.

“It is so shameful that the person who should be protecting the boy is the one who abused him.

“We hope this sentence will send a strong message to other sexual predators that prey on defenceless women and children,” said Ngobeni.
